Located on the west coast of Morbihan, Groix is a small island with a few thousand inhabitants. It is experiencing a severe water shortage.
The causes of this water scarcity
The main cause of this water scarcity on the island of Groix is the significant drought that the region has been experiencing for some time. Indeed, rains have been expected in the region for a long time now. This shortage is the cause of soil dehydration.
This lack of rain from which the island of Groix suffers is caused by winds which push all the rain to the center of Brittany. It rains a lot in this central area while the Groix coasts are deprived of it.
The fears of the inhabitants of the island of Groix
Since the beginning of the year, the Port Melin water reservoir has had a water level lower than usual during this time of year. Due to this state of affairs, the island was declared on drought alert. Residents fear reliving the same episode as in 1989 when they were forced to bring in water by boat every day. With the upcoming holiday season and the arrival of tourists, the demand for water will double, which will be a huge problem for the island.
Measures put in place to save water
Several measures have been put in place to save water and combat this drought. Groix is now prohibited from filling swimming pools. Regarding watering gardens and vegetable gardens, it is prohibited between 8 a.m. and 20 p.m. You must still use the minimum volume of water you need for watering. A 25% reduction in water consumption is also applied to professionals. Everyone must make efforts regarding their water consumption so that the island of Groix can get through this delicate period.
